Inverness Guide
Inverness has plenty to offer to anyone who wants to get a closer look at the most famous city in the Highlands of Scotland. It can be reached via the A9 from the north and south, the A82 from Loch Ness to the south west and the A96 from the north east, which comes through Culloden. Inverness Airport isn’t far away either, so you can see how easy it is to reach the heart of Inverness itself.
History of Inverness
Once you’re there you can enjoy many of the superb sights Inverness has to offer. There is a lot of history here, not least the battleground of Culloden and Urquhart Castle not far down towards Loch Ness. As such Inverness provides the ideal location for any holiday in this part of Scotland, as everything is close by.
Inverness has been a settlement for hundreds of years, and the Picts ruled here in AD 565. You can also see Inverness Castle, which has a commanding view over the River Ness. There has been a castle here for nearly a thousand years – possibly longer. The river itself also provides a superb opportunity for river walks and a chance to escape from the bustle of the city – even though you are only a short distance away from it. It is this unique blend of the relaxing surroundings and the vibrant city life together that makes Inverness such a good choice for somewhere to stay.
Modern Inverness
Inverness also boasts a harbour and a lively shopping centre. Look out for Church Street and the High Street while you are there, and take the time to stop for a coffee as you watch the world go by. You will also find a Victorian market, close to where the Inverness railway station can be found – another way to reach the centre of Inverness when you first arrive.
Don’t be too surprised at hearing Gaelic being spoken by some people in Inverness. Indeed a lot of Inverness place names were created from the Gaelic language, so you are bound to pick up a little bit of the language during your stay.
There are lots of reasons to come to Inverness. But whether you want to shop, relax, explore or simply take it all in over the space of a few days, you will love every part of this delightful Scottish location. In fact, you might find it hard to drag yourself away.
